Artist's Comments

This one was painted with natural media, watercolor and took maybe an hour or so. Had no access to a working scanner, so I used a digital camera and then touched it up a bit with Photoshop. Guess what kind of watercolors and paper I used for it. With art, the quality of media isn't everything; the skill of the artist also determines the outcome. The best artists are those who can make masterpieces with the cheapest media.

I wanted to paint a picture of a scarlet macaw for awhile, since that is what most people think of when they hear the word ';parrot'. It's a colorful bird, though not much of a 'talker'. For this picture, I used no black, but instead let the colors mix and darken each other for more of a natural feel.

Commissions of this quality I would probably ask for around $60-75 or more, depending on the complexity of the character and background. I'm open for not only bird commissions, but other animals as well. Right now I'm getting hooked on realism, but I'll go for cartoon-style if you prefer.

Next painting might be one of a blue and gold macaw, or a cockatoo, probably rose-crested, sulfur-crested, or moluccan. I'm thinking of doing some more lovebird and budgerigar paintings because those birds are fun to paint!

Critique is very much appreciated!

Now this is getting real and more challenging for me to critique!

Somewhere on the parrot's feet claws, I don't know if thats your intention of adding the fog effect with water colors.

If you want to show the bird a bit more, try avoiding getting the water colors to come in contact with the bird.

Cool! The blue blotch in the foreground could be emphasized a bit more (making the macaw layered over just a little bit by foliage), but other than that, this is really nice.

Maybe his right shoulder could also be raised. The shoulders are a bit uneven.
I like the way you did the beak. You can practically feel it. The outline could be a bit diminished, but don't take it out altogether. Also, his eye is a little small. Maybe put some red around it for irises.
I've always loved how parrots' eyes look so dinosaurian. Ain't they cute?

The claws aren't meant to show, since the bird's legs are surrounded by foliage. Anyway, thank you for the advice! It was mostly my intention to try and overlap the bird, but I'm not that good with watercolours still so I had some trouble with that part. Anyway, I'm glad you like the picture!

Thank you! I will remember to do that for future pictures! And I'm glad you like the beak, 'cause that was a bit of a tough one! The blue blotches were meant to be shading and as an experiment with colour theory. Great critique! :D

I have nothing useful to say, but I do love this...

Thanks! I like the how you paid close attention to the details. I can't wait to see your next art because so far when you draw birds, it has become very challenging for me to critique. XD

This is very nice! I could tell what kind of bird it was straight away without reading the info!

However it seems as though you need more practice with painting. You don't seem very experienced yet (who am i to talk? neither am i!) as there are conflicts with style. You've gone for a realistic look, yet you've marked in the outlines, as a child might, OR as a cartoonist might. I think you need to decide whether you're going for a toony style or a realistic one, and develop some loose "rules" you associate with your painting style, i don't mean rules that say "this must be done this way and that must be done that way", but just some kind of personal "code of practice" that you use to keep a consistant look throughout.

there are some smudges on the picture, it looks as though there was a little too much water in one area, and that brings the quality down somewhat. The background is weak, but that looks intentional.

To sum up the picture overall, i would have to say it is "nice" but it is nothing more than just "nice". It doesn't make me go "wow that's a great picture!" I can't find any obvious, glaring faults, but at the same time, I can't see anything strikingly good about it either.

Don't thank me.
